Sex around the world – season 1

Mélanie Dion, Lisette Marcotte

Summary

Did you know that Australians have more outdoor sex than any other country? Or Brazilians are obsessed with bum shaking? From sexual fantasy to polygamy, this documentary series reveals how the one thing that everyone has in common means something different in every country around the world.

Sex Around The World takes us to fantastic, intimate and often bizarre places, both geographically and sexually. Our host, journalist Philippe Desrosier is on a mission to debunk stereotypes, and learn about cultural ideals and sexual orientations. He excavates the history of these places to better understand the origin and evolution of sexual customs.

What is socially acceptable in one place may be immoral, and sometimes even illegal in others. Taboos, turn-ons and tantric sex ~ this docu-series reveals all. But the real focus is people, not voyeurism. Unless of course, people enjoy that in your part of the world!

Sweden

If this social-democrat haven, Sweden, is synonymous with beautiful, promiscuous girls, the Swedes' liberal-mindedness regarding nudity has often been misinterpreted by foreigners, which means that tourists arriving here like Vikings to ravish young horny girls… often fail miserably !

Rwanda

In 1994, Rwanda experienced one of the worst genocides in history. But 42% of Rwandans were born after these tragic events. Despite this renewed population, many taboos endure and people blame the puritans. Catholicism, introduced by European settlers, left deep marks. But Rwanda has unique ways of celebrating sexuality.

United Kingdom

The first cliché we think about England is that of Puritanism. According to the stereotype, the English are supposedly more prudish than most, although the United Kingdom has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies among Western European countries. Otherwise, we visit Brighton to meet burlesque artists and a prolific writer and back to London, we enter a B & B that looks like Disneyland.. for adults !

Argentina

The second largest country in South America, Argentina may be the most European of American countries, but you will find here a particular attitude about sex. Aside his archetypes, like gauchos and tango, here, the seduction game is an integral part of life, and people take pride in their appearance. There are a lot of sexual references in jokes, films, television shows, even on public television.

India

Despite the fact that the English were kicked out of India in 1947, they left deep scars. Though the country is westernizing fast, it's still very spiritual. Here, sex is a divine subject, a gift of nature, as there is a god named Kama, a word that means “Sex”… And some temples have explicit engravings that some might call pornographic! Anyway, let’s meet Indians and find how they celebrate sexuality !

France

For a stranger, France seems to be the land of love and sex, but what is it really? Here, swingers clubs are very popular, erotic shows too. In addition, a disability organization has published a nude calendar and we are interested in sexist advertising.

China

The history of sexuality in China can be divided into 3 major periods. In ancient China. people had a positive attitude towards sex. Drawings depicting intercourse were very popular. Then, with the Song and Ming dynasties, Confucian philosophy frowned upon sex. And from the Cultural Revolution until today, the values of ancient China were revived, allowing for a more favourable outlook on sex.

Japan

The land of the rising sun is a fascinating place, full of characters straight out of mangas. The sexuality of the Japanese mirrors their society and seems full of codes and closed off to the peering eyes of foreigners. Indeed, when it comes to sex, japanese go very far and do things that might seem strange, and even quite extreme to someone from the outside.

Partners

The series was made possible by TV5 Québec-Canada, with support from the Quebecor Fund and the Bell Fund. It has been broadcast in many countries thanks to HG Distribution.
